Poseidonia-Paestum dalle antichità greche a quelle paleocristiane Le Guide di Paestum e Velia en
When you think of the ancient city of Poseidonia-Paestum, you immediately remember the greek domination with its perfectly preserved magnificent doric temples, the Roman colony with its huge forum and the amphitheater, damaged by the modern road. But the story of the city is longer, it goes on for centuries.
Paestum was in fact very important also in medieval time, especially in the early Christian age (fifth century AD), when it became the seat of bishops and enlarged its religious supremacy until Velia.
A centuries-long story can be traced through the guided tour that leads from the archaeological site to the basilica of Annunciation, considering a great number of archaeological evidences as medieval tombs, grave goods and walls.
The old church of Annunciation built in the fifth century AD is the highest expression of early Christian artistic and religious tradition in Paestum. It has three naves divided by stone columns, there are few traces of frescoes in the apse. The architectural style is harmonious, solemn and simple at the same time. When you get inside, you feel an atmosphere of strong spirituality.
