Palinuro, il mare e il suo mito Le Guide di Paestum e Velia en
Palinuro belongs to the town of Centola and it is among the most popular and well-known seaside resorts of the Cilento coast. Its name is linked to the roman mythology: Virgil in the Aeneid tells us about Enea's helmsman called Palinuro. Bernardino Rota, a Neapolitan writer of the 16th century, gives, instead, another version of the same myth: Palinuro fell in love with the beautiful girl Kameraton, but she did not love him. Sailing along the wonderful coast is an amazing experience. Cape Palinuro is a long sea-lime cliff plunging into the blue sea, the "blue Palinuro". Since ancient times, water and wind have caused the erosion of the stone and formed a great number of marine caves. Each cave has a particular name: monks’grotto, blood’s grotto, the sulphurous grotto, bones’ grotto. The most beautiful one is the Blue Grotto, where a beam of natural light entering from an underground tunnel is reflected on the bright blue surface of the water. It’s a miracle of nature !!!
There are beautiful hidden bays as that of “good sleep”, a very nice, quiet place to bath; the beach near the natural arch, the symbol of Palinuro, where some scenes of Don Chaffey's famous film "The Argonauts2" were shot in 1963. Furthermore, there are different old watchtowers built on the rock to defend the population against barbarians’ attacks. And if you are lucky, in February and March, you can also see a nice yellow flower called Primula palinuri, so special that it has been elected as a symbol of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park.
