Il rosso, il giallo e il bianco: viaggio nei colori del Cilento Le Guide di Paestum e Velia en
AGROPOLI: one of the most beautiful villages of the coast, considered the northern gate of the Cilento Park, Vallo di Diano and Alburni mountains. Its name derives from Acropolis, "high citadel", a kind of stronghold built in the 6th century a.D. by the Byzantines to defend the territory during the war against the Goths. It’s a picturesque and fascinating village on a high promontory overlooking the sea. Going up on the steep monumental staircase, we reach the church of Our Lady of Costantinople and that of Saint Peter and Paul. On the peak of the hill lies the imposing Aragonese castle, dominating the northern part of the Gulf of Salerno. It offers a breathtaking view, spreading out to the Amalfi Coast and Capri. While visiting the fortress, we can remember Luisa Sanfelice, a Neapolitan noblewoman involved in the Neapolitan revolution of 1799, who lived in the castle for a while.
The famous poet Giuseppe Ungaretti, visited Agropoli in 1930 and described the ancient village and the fortress in his "Mezzogiorno".
Beside history and art, highlights of this territory have always been food, wine, figs and olive oil.
Since ancient times, lots of people have talked about the good qualities of these products, such as Angel Keys, an American doctor who lived in Pioppi, a small sea resort. He talked about the “Mediterranean diet", a healthy natural food system.
Thanks to the calcareous soil and the good climate, wine is excellent. It has a DOP certification.
Also olive oil has a DOP label; it’s typical for its light yellow color, fruity aroma and delicate taste. And finally the Cilento white figs, harvested in summer, dried in the sun and stuffed with raisins, almonds.
Let us enjoy together!
