Grotte di Castelcivita: viaggio nel sottosuolo del Cilento
The caves of Castelcivita

The caves of Castelcivita are a karst cave system in Campania, near the Calore river, on the western side of the Alburni mountains. They are quite five kilometres long and represent one of the biggest and most important speleological systems of southern Italy.

The are also called “Spartacus caves” because according to the popular tradition, the roman gladiator used the cave sas shelter during his march from Brindisium to the Sele river.
During the guided tour, you can follow a truly evocative path through ponds, tunnels and cavities, enriched by stalactites, stalagmites and limestone formations with fanciful shapes. Very beautiful  are the Crocodile Room and the Throne Room; spectacular is the Pagoda, the most surprising formation of the caves.
The complex is also important from an archaeological point of view. In fact, numerous
findings have emerged since the 1970s and show that the caves have been frequented since the prehistory.
There are three possible routes: the simple one fo tourists, the middle one for those who want to spend more time in the caves and the difficult one reserved to speleologists.
The path recommended by our guides is the tourist one, because it is easier and full of emotions
