Site description

The Alento Oasis is a vast green area created after the construction of a dam built from 1984 to 1994 to intercept the course of the river Alento. The visit to the dam gives the possibility to see its working system and offers a breathtaking view of the artificial lake. The visitor will also have the opportunity to walk along the underground inspection tunnels that are very important for monitoring.

The wide green area near the dam is equipped with paths, pic-nic areas and wooden structures for birdwatching that lead to the discovery of the interesting birds present in the Oasis (grey herons, kingfishers, marsh hawks, moorhens, river nightingales). Among the amphibians, there are rare species such as the salamander and the yellow-bellied howler. Among the reptilians there are different snakes and the marsh turtle. Remarkable is the presence of the rare otter in the river, thus indicating the excellent quality of water.

The botanical garden contains typical plants and flowers of the Cilento Park ( broom, mastic, strawberry tree). The rich flora of the oasis can also be appreciated while walking along the river. There are rows of poplars, willows, myrtle, helichrysum, hawthorn and roses. The visitors of the Alento oasis find themselves immersed in an atmosphere of relax, sports and cultural activities in the open air. On request, you can rent a mountain bike, a green car and it is possible to book a guided tour service by using ecological buses. The natural biodiversity of the oasis is also included in the food, wine  and special dishes offered at the self-service restaurant, made with local products.

We recommend to bring with you: camera, hat, comfortable clothes and shoes and a sweatshirt (if you want to visit the inspection tunnels of the dam).
