Da Poseidonia-Paestum ad Agropoli, sulle tracce del primo cristianesimo
Early Christian culture from Paestum to Agropoli

The tour "On the traces of early Christian culture in Poseidonia-Paestum", can be integrated with the guided visit to Agropoli, a pretty town located a few kilometers further in the south. The town was perhaps included in the bishop’s properties, as can be read in pope Gregorio Magno’s letter dated 592 AD. The letter says that bishop Felice lived in Agropoli and was responsible for the large territory between the gulf of Salerno and Policastro.

In the old centre lies the mother church dedicated to Saint Peter and Paul, the patron saints of Agropoli.

According to the tradition, the church was probably built after Saint Paul’s arrival, as we read in a letter written by the pope himself in 593 AD.

Other evidences of early Christian culture can be found in the Civic Museum: an epigraph on the lid of a tomb found in a necropolis and a cross engraved on a clay lamp
