Da Capodifiume alla Madonna del Granato: alla scoperta di due santuari Le Guide di Paestum e Velia en
At the feet of Mount Calpazio, in the Capodifiume area, the river Salso springs as a healthy and beneficial source for the local economy. Its calcareous water has created over millions of years a particular kind of limestone, also used for the great Greek temples. At the mouth of the river, in ancient times, there seems to have been a sanctuary, perhaps dedicated to Demeter, goddess of the harvest. Few remains of it can be seen in the water which makes this place full of suggestions and energy, together with the luxuriant surrounding nature.
Going up the hill of Capaccio, we will visit one of the most important catholic churches of this area, dedicated to Santa Maria Maggiore, later called Madonna del Granato (Our Lady of the pomegranate). Ancient legends related to the greek goddess Hera Argiva are mixed up with the Christian cult of Mary, Queen of Grace, Lady of fertility and abundance. The panorama opening onto the plain and the bay of Salerno is amazing.
The visit takes about two hours.
