Da Agropoli a Rocca Cilento, di castello in castello Le Guide di Paestum e Velia en
This itinerary proposes the visit of two medieval villages in Cilento. Let’s start with the discovery of Agropoli, northern gate of the Cilento coast. The word Agropoli refers to the greek “Acropolis” which means high citadel. It’s due to the fact that this promontory was the first landing place of the Greeks in this area, during the colonisation in ancient times. Leaving the modern city and walking up on the monumental staircases, we will reach the old town. What are worth visiting there, are the tangle of alleys, the church of Santa Maria of Constantinople, built by sailors to honor their protectress; church of the patrons of the city SS Peter and Paul and finally the Angevin/ Aragonese castle.
Leaving Agropoli we move towards the hills inland, to visit Rocca Cilento, a small town lying 600 metres on the sea level, capital of the ancient barony of Cilento. Here time seems to slow down. Around the town there is still the old defensive wall, largely incorporated in the aristocrati palaces built later. From the lower part of the town we will reach the castle, one of the largest fortresses in southern Italy, built to control the Sele plane to the north and the Velia plane to the south.
