Pompeii is a very ancient city, whose primitive nucleus was founded by the Oscan, an italic population. Its origin dates back perhaps to the seventh century BC.
The inhabited first nucleus was built on a large lava platform, at about 25 meters above sea level,
formed during an ancient eruption.
Thanks to its geographical position, the proximity of the Sarno river and the sea, it became soon a rich trade centre. It was also occupied by the Etruscans and the Greeks. During the tremendous eruption in 79 AD, perhaps in the autumn, the city was buried under ashes and pumices and for centuries its traces were lost. A new town called Civita was built on the compact shelf of ashes. At the end of the sixteenth century, after the excavation of water pipes, ruins of ancient buildings came to light but nobody understood that it was the lost Pompeii. Later the latin inscription "Respublica Pompeianorum" was found (CILX, 1018). This was the first certain sign to identify the town. Here the private building occupy a large part of the city allowing to study the basic lay-out of the Roman domus type: the House of the Faun, a huge private villa, which occupies an area of 2,865 square meters, or small houses close to commercial activities, such as the famous "Taberna" of Asellina and still the extraordinary house of Menandro where it is possible to admire the sublime wall decoration, and many others. At the same time it is possible to visit public buildings such as the gym or the thermal baths; or places of entertainment such as the amphitheater, the oldest in the world and theaters and still the places of pleasure, the so called “lupanare” that is the brothel. There is a Forum, the commercial, political, religious and social heart of the city, where tourists gaze at the imposing cone of Mount Vesuvius. Pompeii gives you incredible emotions through the choice of numerous itineraries !!!
