Museo archeologico di Pontecagnano: gli etruschi di frontiera Le Guide di Paestum e Velia en
Ancient written sources tell about the existence of some Etruscan cities in Campania, probably twelve. One was for sure Pontecagnano, called Amina by Pliny the Elder, the famous roman writer.
The area has been inhabited since the Eneolithic age, but it was only in the seventh century b.C. that some Etruscan moved from the north to the south and founded a real settlement.
Grave goods and precious items found in a great number of excavated tombs have been taken as evidence of the Etruscan colonization and are now displayed in the archaeological museum. The artefacts are classified into some groups, according to different periods. Highlights and hidden gems of the collection are some vessels and weapons made of bronze and silver, found in tombs of princes and princesses. They underline the great importance that the territory had in ancient times, something that today is hardly visible if you look at the modern inhabited area. Visiting the museum is also worth to understand the relationships between Etruscan and Greeks in the past.
Furthermore, it’s useful to understand the transformations of the landscape throughout the centuries.
All the artefacts are in perfect condition and give us the possibility to discover the economic power of this ancient civilization.
Missing the visit would be a great pity!
